Meet Connie Stephany and her new short story: FOOLED AROUND & FELL IN LOVE

Fools Rush In: An April Fools Day Anthology

Tell us about your newest release:

My newest release is a short story included in an April Fool’s Day anthology with 7 other talented authors. My story, Fooled Around and Fell In Love, features two characters from my debut novel, Second Chances, which came out in December of 2014.

What is the story about?

Two best friends, Tom and Colleen, who secretly love each other, decide to get back at Tom’s mom for all of the April Fools pranks she has pulled on them in years past. Tom comes up with a great farce, where they pretend to get engaged. Little do Tom and Colleen know, the joke is still on them.

Who is the main character?

There are two main characters in this short story: Tom and Colleen.

What inspired this tale?

A friend of mine, Karan, had mentioned this anthology and I decided I wanted to give it a try. I had to come up with a good story quickly, and the theme was it had to happen on April Fool’s Day.

How did the story come to you?

I really have no idea! I knew I wanted there to be magic and I knew I wanted to write a little about Tom and Colleen. I decided to do a romantic April Fool’s joke and I think it turned out well!

Did you have to research for this novel and if so, why?

Yes! I had to research magic tricks for the proposal. It was fun to find ways to have it be accomplished. A friend of mine, Peter, is the magician in the story and he actually performed the tricks in my short story.

If you did research, what do you think surprised you most to learn and why?

You shouldn’t do magic and drink -- then you get sloppy and people can see your tricks!

Do you relate to your character?

Colleen reminds me of my real life BFF, Stacia. We have been friends for 25 years and I wanted give her a bit more attention than she had in my first novel.

Is your protagonist anything like you personally?

No

What made you write this character; what made them important to you or made you want to tell their story?

Colleen reminds me of my real life BFF, Stacia. We have been friends for 25 years and I wanted give her a bit more attention than she had in my first novel.

Is there anything specific you want readers to know about this piece of work?

This is my second story written, the first being a full-length novel, Second Chances. It’s one that you can feel the emotion and make you wish you could jump into the story and help them see what you see. JUST TELL EACH OTHER you love one another already, will you???

Has the book already been published?

Fools Rush In is already available and is FREE on all formats. Kindle, iTunes and Nook. There are 8 short stories in total and mine is the very last one, but they are all great reads!

Okay, time to meet Colleen, one of the main characters.

Rumor has it your best friend is a man! Tom is his name, I believe. Tell me all about it, how does it work? Friends with benefits?

Tom is one of my two best friends, Abby Simon being the other. Tom gives me the honest male opinion on things like whether or not a guy is really interested in me while Abby will tell me if my butt truly does look fat in my jeans.

Tom and I have a weekly Sunday ritual and it’s nice just to sit with him in my yoga pants and t-shirt without worrying about getting all pretty for him. He brings breakfast and coffee and I dial the phone to our favorite Thai place for dinner. It’s my favorite day of the week.

I wish Tom was my friend with benefits. He’s hot as hell and the nicest guy I’ve ever met, but he’s just not interested in me that way. We almost kissed one time but that was when we were both drunk and I think I passed out. I wanted to slap myself the next day. Luckily, neither of us said a word about it. I don’t want to lose him as my friend just because I have feelings and he doesn’t.

Do friends and family find it odd that the two of you are so close?

Tom’s mom is constantly bugging him about us just getting together. He clearly has no interest and he tells her to drop it each time.

Luckily, Tom and Abby get along great and Abby is dating Tom’s friend, Adam. It makes it fun to get together with them.

Tom’s other friends think it’s weird and ask him why he doesn’t just “hook up” with me. He usually just gives them a glare and tells them to shut the hell up.

Tell me about more about your life. Where do you work? What's your ten year plan? Are you single? Working? Have kids? PTA President or president of your own company?

I’m painfully single. Guys tend to leave me alone when we all go out together because they assume I’m with Tom. It sort of blows my chances of meeting anyone else. Tom never even looks at another girl while we're out. Makes me feel special.

I work as an ultrasound tech at a local hospital. I love my job and I’m known as the best tech out there! My goal is eventually traveling around to different hospitals and train others in identifying things in the ultrasound that we didn’t necessarily learn in our schooling. It’s been a very rewarding career.

Any juicy tidbits to share about the goings-on at work?

Other than my ex, the hot ER doc, sleeping with every intern around? Not much.

Oh, and I guess it’s pretty juicy that the high school principal’s wife is pregnant and I over-heard her on he phone saying something about it not being her husband’s child. To be a fly on the wall for that conversation!!! It’s almost comical that people who come in for tests and procedures don’t realize people around them can hear their entire side of the conversation.

Colleen has been sipping away on a mint flavored hot chocolate since I ran into her. I just have to ask, "Colleen, how do you manage to have such a great figure and drink something full of calories? You're gorgeous! You must tell me your secrets.

Having a mint condition is just a treat I get once a week. It’s my favorite coffee treat and wish I could have one daily, but I work really hard at staying in shape. My yoga pants aren’t just for lazy Sundays! I certainly wish I could be like one of those women who eats whatever she wants, doesn’t exercise and never gains an ounce. Just not me.

I work out at the gym three times a week and walk around my 2 mile block a few times a week. I also add in swimming laps a couple times as well.

Well, Colleen had to run off to work.  In the meantime, You can connect with Connie Stephany at:

The Soldier's Secret

Tell us about your newest release:

My newest release is called “The Soldier’s Secret.”

What is the story about?

The Soldier’s Secret is a historical romance taking place during the American Civil War.

In an era when women are adornments, Northerner Emma Mansfield finds it challenging to fit the mold. It becomes an impossible task when her country is torn apart by civil war. Knowing she must take action, Emma finds herself in the midst of danger and intrigue when she takes up the guise of a young artillery soldier for the Union Army. Desperately trying to find out if her two brothers are alive, Emma must maintain her anonymity as she fights for survival.

Who is the main character?

Emma Mansfield is the main character of the novel.

What inspired this tale?  How did the story come to you?

I had always been fascinated by women flouting social norms. I had known about women dressing as men to go and fight, but I didn’t realize how widespread it was. I love strong heroines as well. The story developed organically from there.

Did you have to research for this novel and if so, why?

The research took me almost as long as the writing of the novel! I was constantly checking battle dates, clothing, stories of women who fought, and even which types of artillery were used by the Union Army.

This also sparked two blog entries, one about women soldiers and the other, about artillery.

If you did research, what do you think surprised you most to learn and why?

I have to say the most interesting thing I found out was about a woman who continued dressing as a man, even after the war ended. She participated in elections, under her assumed name. It wasn’t until she was hit by a carriage that her identity was revealed. Unfortunately, she began suffering from early dementia and was placed in a mental hospital, where they made her dress as a woman. When she died, her old comrades rallied together and insisted she be buried in full uniform, which she was. It was an inspiring story of early transgender rights. She clearly did not feel at home in a woman’s body. At the time, this was considered a mental illness sadly. It’s amazing the support she got though from her fellow soldiers.

Do you relate to your character?  Is your protagonist anything like you personally?

Yes, very much so.

If yes, then how?

I’ve participated in many historical reenactments, and fired a few cannons in my time, like Emma. I also would fight to the death for something I believe in, and to save my family.

What made you write this character; what made them important to you or made you want to tell their story?

I wanted to raise awareness of a little known historical fact. Women have been fighting alongside men in battle since the beginning of time. I feel it’s often overlooked for more prominent male historical figures. I want people to know that women did incredible things, right there with men.

Is there anything specific you want readers to know about this piece of work?

It is a piece of historical fiction. I’ve tried to maintain the facts as much as possible, but I’ve placed my own spin on a few things. I am, after all, telling a story and I want readers to be entertained, as well as learn a little bit about the time period.

Has the book already been published?

Yes, it is in ebook and paperback form on all Amazon Marketplaces.

Now let's meet Heather Osborne's character in her current WIP.

Tell us the title of your WIP:

The Fairest of Them: A Rae Hatting Mystery

Who are you?  What is your name?

Special Agent Rae Hatting

Are you a fictional or historical character?

Fictional

What should we know about you?

I am a driven women. Hell, working for the FBI, you have to be! I have auburn hair and brown eyes, about 5’7” tall. I’m pretty well toned from working out to keep up chasing after perps. I have an adopted daughter, Grace. We found each other after I solved a series of homicides in Colorado, one of them being her older sister, unfortunately (Crushed Gardenias: A Short Story). We live in Virginia.

Crushed Gardenias: A Short Story (A Rae Hatting Mystery Book 1)

Tell us about your story:

When and where is your tale set?

Since this is the first novel, we’re a bit all over the place, but mostly Virginia and California

What is your personal goal? I mean, what do you ultimately want?

I guess figuring out this whole motherhood thing and trying to balance work with family life. I suppose a little romance wouldn't hurt. Actually, I’d like an easy life, but it doesn’t seem to be in the cards at the moment.

What is standing in your way? What conflict(s) do you face?

Aside from every captain in the country wanting me to come check out their supposed serial killer? I guess I’d have to say my biggest conflict is Detective Luke Thompson and his broody nature. He’s a good cop, but he’s haunted by a lot in his past. I hope he can pull it together!

How do I get a copy of your book?  Is it available now or when can we except to see it released?

Because We Care

What is the title of your book?

Because We Care

What is the story about?

Over two years ago, I gave an essay assignment to my college students. The intention was for them to have a written proclamation of their commitment to follow their chosen career path. 99% of my students are studying to enter a profession in healthcare. And I know it only gets harder to move on as each class comes to an end and another begins. Thus, having this personal document they could look back and remember why. Why they were once so passionate about helping others. As I began to read over their submissions, the ordinary turned extraordinary. There was a breadth and depth of relayed experiences that could inspire all walks of life. So here they are, over 100 illuminating stories that my students (from several different semesters) wanted to share with the world. They are authentic, in their own language. Even the chapter titles are excerpts from each respective essay.

Who is the main character?

College students of all ages

What inspired this tale?

It started out as an assignment and then I felt this would be inspirational for people in all walks of life.

How did the story come to you?

I usually come up with ideas while I’m out for a run.

Did you have to research for this novel and if so, why?

I chose to include over 100 stories from a greater total that were submitted for over two years. Then, I had to edit and arrange them for flow.

If you did research, what do you think surprised you most to learn and why?

I was surprised by what these students have experienced outside of the classroom. Their strength of character is unmatched.

Do you relate to your character?

It has added to the deference I already have for these students taking such a noble path.

Is your protagonist anything like you personally?

Yes, we have compassion

What made you write this character; what made them important to you or made you want to tell their story?

It was initially intended to be an assignment to help them reflect on their chosen purpose in life, and it has become so much more.

Is there anything specific you want readers to know about this piece of work?

The stories are authentic, in their own language. Even the chapter titles are excerpts from each respective essay.

When will the novel be available for purchase?

It is available in eBook now on amazon and in print at several online retailers.

Meet NICK TORY and his three JOHNNY books

Nick Tory
Meet the man-without-a-face, NICK TORY and his three JOHNNY  books.

Johnny 12 Steps (Johnny Book)  Johnny Vegas (Johnny Book Book 2)  Johnny Driver (Johnny Books Book 3)

Tell us about your newest release:

My new release is a series of short books (just over 100 pages each) that makes up a trilogy. They are Johnny 12 Steps, Johnny Vegas, and Johnny Driver. They are a blend of humor and action… well they are essentially about a thousand jokes piled up one after another and put into story form. It's sort of a silly, oddball humor that is a little dark but also clean.

What are the stories about?

The story is about Johnny Tee, who is a magnet for trouble. He's a wandering, dimwitted derelict who struggles to stay in one piece physically, but sort of happily moves from one perilous situation to the next, meeting some strange people along the way. He sort of does everything that should make you hate him, but you wind up rooting for him and not knowing why. In the first book he's pushing his way through a self directed 12 step program in order to become a nicer guy. In the second book he goes to Vegas, and in the third he's a driver for a crime syndicate, against his will.
What inspired this tale?

The books are inspired by a real odd combination of other books and humor. Writers like John Swartzwelder, Jack Handey, Richard Stark and Josesph Garber. I keep the rule of writing what would make me laugh.

How did the stories come to you?

I don't remember if anything specific brought the story to mind, but I knew the feel I wanted for the series. I generally outline the story very lightly before I start writing these, because it's just so many jokes and so much dry humor crammed in there, that they have to be short so that you don't slam the thing down on the table and curse at me. They have to keep moving, and I know the reader will come with if they're laughing enough, no matter what is happening to the characters.

Did you have to research for this novel and if so, why?

I did a little research for each of the books. For example, for the first one I had to look into what the 12 steps of a 12 step program were. I need the basic details. But the story is first person and it's told by a dimwitted guy, so whatever I mess up on the technical side can't hurt me. In the upcoming 4th book, which is yet to be published, Johnny becomes a realtor. I knew nothing about real estate, and I kept my research to a minimum because the more Johnny seemingly knew the less it would fit the character.

Do you relate to your character?   Is your protagonist anything like you personally?

I sure hope not, but maybe there's something there. What makes me want to keep writing about Johnny is that he does have that good deep down. Maybe he doesn't always deserve redemption, but I'm going to try and trick you into thinking that he does.

What made you write this character; what made them important to you or made you want to tell their story?

I love writing myself into a corner and trying to get out. That's the whole of Johnny. He is an eternal corner. That sounds bizarre, but if you read it you'll get what I mean. Or maybe you won't, because I'm not sure it makes any sense and there's a good chance I'm insane.
Is there anything specific you want readers to know about this piece of work?

The books are short and they are fun. You can read them in an hour, and you'll find something to laugh at. You won't get cheated. These are like The Ramones of books.
When will the novel be available for purchase?

All 3 are available now on Amazon.

If yes, do you have a link available for buying it?

Sharon Gibbs

Meet SHARON GIBBS and her character: CHRISTOPHER DU LAURENT

Bound to Survive (The Magic Within Book 1)

Tell us the title of your Book:

Bound to Survive (The Magic Within Series Book 1)

Who are you?  What is your name?

Christopher Du Laurent.

Are you a fictional or historical character?

I'm a fictional character.

What should we know about you?

I'm 24, tall with black hair and brown eyes. I'm single. I live with my Uncle Albert and Aunt Rose. In The Dale. They took me in when I was just four after my family were slaughtered in the invasion. They are good kind people and I have followed my uncle's trade, Sword smith. My Uncle avoids trouble but I can't bear to watch others being persecuted.

Tell us about your story:

When and where is your tale set?

My tale begins in the land of Solencia, which used to be pristine I'm told. Now it bears the scars of war, but I see beyond that to the beauty of nature.

What is your personal goal? I mean, what do you ultimately want?

Ultimately I want freedom for the people of our land. To live without choice is to live as we do now, under oppression, ruled by a sword or threat of retribution.

What is standing in your way? What conflict(s) do you face?

What's standing in my way? Well an army for one, but they are no longer the great warriors they once were. Swilling drink like guzzling swine they are fat and lazy. You'll also meet a rude and arrogant Captain, Kovak Turr.  Not my favourite person.

Oh, did I mention a burly tyrant Lord Arnak and his Sorceress Athena. Yes, those two the people fear.

My friends and I are restless, sick of living this way. We face many dangers in our story but I'm sure you will enjoy coming along on this journey with us.

How do I get a copy of your book?

I believe my author said it was available on Amazon in both ebook and paper back.

Here I found the link:

I believe our author is currently writing Book 2.

Is it available now or when can we except to see it released?

Yes the book is available. Apparently Sharon published us on 1st February 2015.

You can connect with my author, Sharon Gibbs, at the following places. Oh and check out our pics on pin interest.

Leo Kane and her new release: Heavensgate: Book 1 'Hope'

Vandamarie Rodgers

Leo Kane and her new release: Heavensgate: Book 1 'Hope'

Tell us about your newest release Heavensgate.

What is the story about?

It is about a gentle child, Jacob, who accidentally sets fire to his home, killing his family. The trauma fragments his mind and gives birth to his taunting, psychotic, sex mad, alter ego, the very dangerous Jake and other characters who vie for control of Jacob’s fragile sanity.

It is also about finding Hope in the darkness of despair, as Jacob battles with himself and with supernatural entities, not all of which have his best interests in mind.

Who is the main character?

That depends on your POV! Jacob thinks he's the main character, but Jake runs the storyline.

What inspired this tale?

My fascination with the supernatural coupled with the daily bombardment of bad news; the terrible things that people do to each other; the horrors that human beings survive because there is no other choice. And the miracle that, in the depths of grief and despair, most people find comfort in hope.

How did the story come to you?

I dreamt about being trapped, drowning under ice and being rescued by a spirit named Hope.

It may sound crazy,  but as the character Jacob says, ‘dreams can be like that.’

Did you have to research for this novel and if so, why?

Yes. I researched multiple / fragmented personality disorders, but I haven’t in any way attempted to present fictional Jacob/Jake as a true example of the condition.

The supernatural elements in the book simply joined in without any need for research!

If you did research, what do you think surprised you most to learn and why?

How common it is to suffer such deep depression that the psyche can no longer cope and, therefore, splits.

Do you relate to your character?

Only in so far as in my past work as a clinical hypnotherapist I met two people with several personalities they were not aware of and that were ruining their lives.

Is your protagonist anything like you personally?

No! Jacob is too introspective and indecisive. Neither am I like his alter ego, Jake. I hate bad manners and foul language; and I swear that I have never murdered anyone!

What made you write this character; what made them important to you or made you want to tell their story?

Once Jacob, Jake and Hope walked into my dreams, writing down their story was the only way that I could get any sleep.

Is there anything you specifically want readers to know about this piece of work?

The storyline in Heavensgate is dark and it’s spooky but not without humour and some good tunes along the way.

Oh, and don’t let the kids read it!

Okay, time to meet the main character:

Who are you?  What is your name?

That depends on which one of us you're talking to, my name is Jacob Andersen. However, the Doc believes that I have multiple personalities.

Doc got his degree free from a packet of Wheaty Flakes!

Don’t listen to him, that’s Jake and he’s insane.

Are you a fictional or historical character?

I, Jacob, am real of course but Jake is fictional.

You'll discover how f**k**g real I am jerk-off when you wake up screaming.

What should we know about you?

I am twice widowed; a bereaved father; and I am just trying to stay sane; survive and escape the ghosts that haunt me.

Shut the f*ck up Jacob for shit’s sake! No f**k*r cares about you!

Ignore that waste of skin; this book is about me, Jacob’s supposedly psychotic, sex crazed alter ego; the doer of his dirty deeds; his fall guy.

Jacob is an insignificant, yellow streak of chicken shit. He is presently, but not for much f**k**g longer, occupying the front seat of our mind. .

Tell us about your story:

When and where is your tale set?

This part of our story ends in 2015 but I will never give up.

Where am I? I am in Heavensgate; a place you need a f**k**g bad miracle to find and a living hell that you can never leave.

We live in the Lodge, by beautiful Lake Disregard and the Alolejos Mountains, quite close to a pretty town, St Johns, in the USA.

or in the f**k**g Psychiatric Unit when the pussy needs a break from me.

What is your personal goal? I mean, what do you ultimately want?

I want my wife and son to come home and the cops to get off my back: I also very much want the ghosts and Jake to leave me alone and I am desperate for the pink Cadillac to stop its drive-by hauntings.

I want to get out of this f**k**g hell hole!

I want to torture that bitch, Hope, who took our f**k**g heart; who stood by and watched us being f**k**g abused; raped; accused of crimes we did not commit! I want Jacob to remember what he f**k**g did to me, what he did to the kid, Jacky and to anyone else sulking around in this shit hole that Jacob calls his sanity.

Ultimately I want total control of this mind, this body and this soul because they f**k**g belong to me!

What is standing in your way? What conflict(s) do you face?

Jake, because he is trying to steal my mind and open the Forbidden Book.

Jacob is in my way! He barbequed our family; he gave our f**k**g heart away to that bitch, Hope; he hid our memories in the Locked Room. He set the Judge on us and the bastard tried to kill me!

Jennifer Loiske and her character: Shannon McLean

Jennifer Loiske

Meet Jennifer Loiske and her character: Shannon McLean

BLACK DIAMOND (McLean Twins Book 1)  Demon's Touch (McLean Twins Book 2)

Tell us the title of your WIP:

Demon Forest, Book 3 of McLean Twins series.

Who are you?  What is your name?

My name is Shannon McLean, I’m thirteen, and I’m a witch.

Are you a fictional or historical character?

I’m purely a product of Jennifer Loiske’s imagination.

What should we know about you?

Well, a while ago I thought I was alone in the world, a plain Jane with no place to go. Now I knew better. Suddenly I was surrounded by relatives: a crazy talented twin brother, Ian, who literally held the keys to magic in his hands; a demonic father, Connor, who had paid a high price for a one-way ticket to hell; and a wannabe big brother, Simon, who was not only half demon but also a hit man of some sort; and me … so not a plain Jane but a witch with ancient spells tingling on my fingertips.

Tell us about your story:

When and where is your tale set?

My story starts from London, moves to England’s countryside, throws me back to London only to take me back to the countryside where the grand finale takes place. My story is an urban paranormal story for teens, so it’s happening right now, right here as we speak…

What is your personal goal? I mean, what do you ultimately want?

I just want to get my father back, but I’m not sure if he’s in too deep. After all, I know perfectly well that demons cannot be saved.

What is standing in your way? What conflict(s) do you face?

I guess you could say that my worse enemy is my father, but then again he’s also his worse enemy. A part of him wants to be saved but another, way darker part kicks back with all he's got. I’m pretty sure me and my twin brother Ian could handle our dad, but unfortunately for us he’s not alone. He has a lot of demonic help and if that’s not enough, some black witches are helping him too.

How do I get a copy of your book?

What is the title or working title for this piece?

Demon Forest, but it’s only a working title. I’m sure it will change many times before going public J

Is it available now or when can we except to see it released?

It’s not available yet, but it will be released in autumn 2015. Meanwhile you can start the story from the beginning as Black Diamond (book 1) and Demon’s Touch (book 2), both available on ebooks and paperbacks.
